What is a root canal and why do people often need one? Read on to find out!
Why Do You Need a Root Canal?
A root canal is needed when the soft tissue inside the root canal (pulp) becomes infected. This can be caused by a variety of reasons including deep decay or cracks. When left untreated, it can lead to an abscess. If you are experiencing pain, tooth discoloration, sensitivity to heat or cold, or tenderness to your bone and gum, then you may need a root canal treatment.
How a Root Canal Treatment Works
After the pulp becomes infected, your dentist will need to take digital x-rays to see the area more clearly. They will then make an opening in the crown of your tooth to clean the pulp and reshape it. Your dentist will then provide you with a crown or other method of restoration to further protect your tooth.
